Home Design :: Mineral Creek

pd-mineral-creek-01

This summer I kept Dirk, my amazing photographer, very busy snapping shots of my completed homes of 2013. This specific design is home to one of my favourite couples, both with absolutely enjoyable personalities and amazing taste.

The priority was to design the home to be sustainable while on a budget. The home faces south to maximize natural light and heat, large overhangs to shed the west coast weather, a 2-storey wood stove fireplace to heat the entire home (with the option of electric baseboards as backup or for those fiercely cold times), sourced local labour and materials and the option for future investments, like solar panels and rain barrels.

Enter into an open concept living-dining-kitchen designed perfect for entertaining with a guest bed and bath located nearby. Upstairs, the bedrooms are separated by a large loft over looking the great room and out to the forested backyard/peak-a-boo ocean view.  A private master suite and balcony located to one side with 2 bedrooms on the other. Private and entertaining quarters designed here. Interiors coming soon.

Since I still can’t share any new, in process projects that are currently being developed, I thought I’d dig through some of my archives – which is always a fun ride to look back on. This home is from a project I completed over 5 years ago. With the living space located soely on the upper floor, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and an open floor plan with vaulted ceilings gives each room a mountain view. The lower floor has  spare bedrooms, a rec room, a 2-car garage and plenty of space for storage.

Ps. If you haven’t already, head on over here and join in on our huge giveaway. Don’t miss out!

Name This | Win That

It’s that time again for our Name This | Win That contest. Tell us your best names for this western European style home and you may just end up winning something for your home. But before we begin, here is a little information on the home.

This 800 square foot home was inspired by French Second Empire, which was mainly determined by their mansard roofs (a four-sided gambrel-style hip roof punctured by dormers). Meaning the attic space itself, it makes maximum use of the interior space of the attic and offers a simple way to add one or more storeys to a building. Within that space are 2-bedrooms and a den, 1-bathroom and loft with two windows per room to maximize the direction of natural light. Below includes plenty of closed and open storage, guest bedroom, compact kitchen with all the essentials and built-in roll-out prep station, banquet breakfast nook, and open living with exterior covered patio. All that in a 20′ x 30′ footprint.

UPDATE (7/25/2013) – Contest has ended! Sorry for the delay; Congrats to Nick with the name Olde English 800! I am not a big fan of beer, but absolutely love the name. The fact that the home is 800 square feet and an english style home is what makes this a perfect name. Home Design :: Laramee

When the owners went searching for a home, they wanted a fixer-upper with enough land to expand their possibilities. So when they stumbled on a home for sale with two lots they didn’t have to think twice. Even though the home did need a lot of work, they put it on hold and decided to build a carriage home located at the rear of lot 2. With help from myself to design the plans and, to name a few of the trades, Yardworks Excavating, Chad Wood Construction, and Peak Electrical to complete construction. The attention to detail and character during the process demonstrated their passion in personalizing their detached secondary home.
